Why Studying Abroad is More Affordable Than Ever

While studying abroad is generally considered more expensive than studying in your home country, an international degree brings its own incredible value.

An international degree is also far more accessible and affordable today than it has been in the past.

So, if you’re considering a degree abroad, keep reading to discover why now is a great time.

Scholarships

Fortunately, there are a wealth of scholarships available for international students, some of which you’ll be considered for automatically upon applying, that make studying abroad extremely affordable and easy.

There are generally two classifications of scholarships: internal and external.

1. Internal Scholarships

Internal scholarships are scholarships that are offered directly from the university you’re applying to.

Internal scholarships also can be separated into two categories: entrance scholarships and application scholarships.

  • Entrance scholarships are scholarships for which you will automatically be considered when applying to a university. They are generally merit-based awards given to students based on GPA, standardized test scores, and essay responses.

  • Application scholarships are specific scholarships which you need to apply for in order to be considered. Information about eligibility and requirements for these scholarships can generally be found on university websites.

2. External Scholarships

External scholarships are scholarships that are offered by third parties outside of the university you applied to.

For instance, governments, private institutions or other donors can offer scholarships for students. These scholarships may have restrictions, such as the field of study, and are also awarded on an application-base.

Cost of University

While international students can face hefty tuition fees at many universities, students will find certain study destinations are considerably more affordable than others. For example, private colleges in the U.S. can have annual tuition fees of up to $50,000 compared to average international tuition in Canada of approximately $26,000.

In fact, some schools charge significantly lower fees with average tuition reaching as low as $15,000.

So, strategically choosing a university with more affordable international student tuition can give the benefits of studying abroad without breaking the bank.

Work & Study

Did you know that study permits in the U.K., Australia, and Canada generally allow students to work while pursuing their degree?

On average, you can work up to 20 hours part-time while school is in session, and full-time during scheduled holidays (e.g. summer break).

This is a great opportunity to earn money to support your education. Summer jobs and internships not only provide strong sources of income, but also help you build relevant experience for your CV to help land a great job after your degree!

Be sure to check your study permit for the precise working rules depending on which country you end up studying in.
