The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a form of standardized English testing that prepares non-native English speakers for studying abroad and immigration. It is widely accepted in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. There are two types of PTE: general and academic. Both types of test formats are completed on a computer at a secure Pearson test center and meant to be marked objectively through their automated scoring system. In the same manner as other competitors for English standardized testing, the PTE testing categories include reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The test takes three hours to complete and results get back to you in approximately 5 days. It is divided into the three sections: speaking and writing are put together into one section, then there are separate sections for both reading and listening. There is also an optional 10 minute break between the reading and listening parts.
Understanding the Format
Step one to preparing for any exam is knowing what you’ll be tested on and how. By understanding the PTE testing format, you can plan for your testing conditions accordingly. Do all of the practice exercises and time yourself. What takes you the longest? Which do you struggle with the most? Put your efforts into improving the aspects in which you struggle with the most.
Use the Preparation Path
There are many ways to prepare for this test, and first and foremost, a solid understanding of the English language is key. However, the Preparation Path is a great way to streamline the learning process for this test. Pearson Education is a British-owned company that’s been a leader in educational publishing since 1844. It’s common to see their textbooks in use across North America but they also operate in over 70 countries. Safe to say, their teaching approaches are tried and proven, and using their resources is one of the best ways to prepare for their specific testing.
Question Types and Testing Conditions
There are 20 different question formats that often combine two language skills such as listening and reading. For example, there are some multiple choice questions where you select just one answer and others where you select multiple answers. Integrating these different question structures and combining the language categories is designed to create a more comprehensive testing style.
As you will be taking the test in a testing facility on a secured computer, be prepared for the environment. If you need the 10 minute break between the reading and listening portion to recollect yourself, don’t hesitate to take it. Be sure to get to the testing site well-rested, healthy, and early!
PTE Apps and Resources
Take advantage of all of the resources Pearson provides. This includes their app which has features such as interactive practice questions and a study planner to track your progress. The scored practice tests are vital for preparation as this will give you the opportunity to understand the test format. These tools prepare you so that you won’t be overwhelmed or surprised the day of the exam. Pearson also has self-study books for independent learners, and online courses for those looking for more directed study guidance.
