Life as an International Student in Australia

Adjusting to a new school in a foreign country can be intimidating, but Australia’s welcoming culture and beautiful landscapes certainly make the transition easier.

Here are some perks of being an international student in Australia!

The Diverse International Student Network

Australia has one the largest international student populations in the world, and for this reason it's easy to find a piece of home by joining the many international student networks and cultural clubs. You’ll always find fun cultural festivals around the university campuses. It’s an easy way to make friends and the tasty food is always a plus! These events are also a fantastic way to meet new people from around the world and learn about unfamiliar and exciting places to plan your next adventures.

It’s always easier to be surrounded by people you can relate to, but it’s important to take advantage of the Australian experience as well. Take in as much as you can during this experience and move out of your comfort zone!

Scholarship and Work Opportunities

One of the major causes of reluctance in pursuing an international education can be the cost, but since Australia is so welcoming of their international student population they’ve got scholarships specially designed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

You’ll also find that there’s no stigma towards working and studying; it’s an incredibly common practice and you’ll find students from all walks of life working together in shops and restaurants. The high cost of living can be intimidating, but wages take these costs into consideration and work hours are stable.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the various student discounts offered as well! Whether it’s food, shopping, or entertainment, your student ID can get you loads of perks.

Travel

Australia has a great reputation for its sunny weather and beautiful beaches. You’ll find that national parks, vineyards and the outbacks are easily accessible. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see the sites and pick up some fun new skills such as diving and surfing. If you’re keen on getting to know the wildlife, there are volunteer trips available to spend some time in animal sanctuaries.

The airfare to New Zealand, Tasmania and Indonesia are also incredibly affordable. During long weekends and semester breaks, it’s normal practice to get a group of friends together and go for a trip!

Fun Bits of Student Life

Coffee, coffee, coffee.

You’ll learn quickly how seriously Aussies take their caffeine. With a coffee shop around every corner, there’s always cute spaces to study.

Informalities

Aside from the friendly greetings coming at you left and right, you might find it quite strange how casually people address each other. There will also be the occasional professor insisting you call them by their first name.

Sports

Whether it’s rugby, Aussie football, or volleyball, the team spirit is inherent within the culture. It’s a great way to mingle with the community and get involved! Many students spend loads of time at the gym as well, and the beaches are filled with fitness lovers.

English

Depending on where you’re coming from, this is a great opportunity to master English! The Aussie slang is quirky and can be confusing at first, but you’ll be accustomed to it in no time.

Food

The groceries are fresh, the wine is cheap, and the pub food is tasty! However, most restaurants close at around 9pm since dinner is usually early; if you’re used to eating out late be sure to keep this in mind.

Aside from being a stunning country, Australia is a wonderful and exciting place to be a student. You’ll grow a sense of independence in a place spilling with adventure. There’s so much to learn outside of the classroom and you’ll find enjoying your student life to the fullest!
