Best Student Cities in Canada

Canada ranks as one of the top choices for international students, and for good reason! With such diversity apparent within its own population, the Canadian culture is very welcoming. Ranked as one of the safest countries in the world, studying abroad in Canada can give worried parents peace of mind as well. There are reputable universities spread across the country in cities with their own unique appeal!

Vancouver

Home to the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, Vancouver has all the appeal of city life combined with stunning nature views. As a seaport, it’s right by the ocean and also surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks. It has a thriving arts and music scene, and is a popular filming destination.

While it’s one of the more expensive cities in Canada in terms of cost of living, it’s still affordable and there’s plenty of work opportunities for students. The average cost for a student apartment is between $800 - $1200 CAD for a shared space. University student housing on campus is similar in costs, however, it includes a meal plan and living on campus is a great way to really get into the student culture.

Vancouver also has a mild climate in comparison to most cities in Canada. There’s more rain, but less snow if you’re worried about surviving the cold Canadian winters. Summer time in Vancouver is beautiful and a great time to visit the beaches and go hiking in the surrounding nature. Be sure to spend some time in Granville Island, Stanley Park, Grouse Mountain, and all of the other great city locations when you’re not too busy studying.

It’s also one of Canada’s most ethnically diverse cities, which also means there’s tons of delicious food options. Vancouver is a great place to study with lots of opportunities for adventure around the city!

Toronto

As the largest city in Canada, Toronto is a bustling metropolis with plenty to offer. With notable universities such as The University of Toronto, Ryerson, and York University sharing the city, the student population is immense. Toronto is one the most multicultural cities in the world with almost half of the population born outside of Canada and over 140 languages spoken. The many multicultural neighbourhoods allow for diverse options in housing, cuisine and entertainment.

The prices of accommodation vary from $600CAD - $4000CAD, so there’s a wide range of options depending on your budget. It’s a great place to experience all of Canada's four seasons, so you can get a taste of winter while also enjoying hot summer sunshine, the fresh spring air, and the beautiful autumn colours.

Montreal

Many international students flock to Montreal for McGill’s renowned reputation, but many tend to stay afterwards for the lifestyle. The island of Montreal is also home to other notable universities such as Concordia, and Université de Montreal (UdeM). An incredibly bilingual city, it’s a great place to learn both French and English.

With a mix of historical architecture and constant new developments, students can take in the stunning sights of the city at the top of Mont Royal. In comparison to Vancouver and Toronto, rent is also very affordable! Studio apartments cost between $900 - $1300 downtown, but a 3 bedroom shared student unit will average around $650/month each. If you’re looking for other options and don’t mind a little commute, there are much cheaper apartments farther away from downtown. With each neighbourhood having their own unique demographic, it’s easy for students to find a place to call home in Montreal.

Quite cosmopolitan, the city boasts its unique culture while welcoming diversity. Rich in history, arts, and culture, Montreal is a great city to enjoy both your academic endeavours and a fantastic quality of life.

Ottawa

The capital of Canada, Ottawa is rich with political history. With institutions such the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, there are tons of program choices for students.

If you choose to rent off campus, there are a few options depending on your price range. One bedroom condos are on the more expensive side, however if you choose to rent out an apartment with 2-3 friends, it’ll cost between $550 - $800CAD each.

Ottawa is a fantastic place to enjoy both the Canadian winters and summers. Skating along the Rideau Canal in the winter, boating on the Ottawa river in the summer, or attending the world famous Winterlude, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the city.

It’s also the best city to enjoy Canada Day! Ottawa is also nicely situated between Montreal and Toronto. The trains between these cities are efficient, so it’s easy to take little trips to surrounding areas as well.

Canada is a country full of academic opportunity and with a country so large, there’s bound to be a place where you can find a sense of home. While each university has its own unique appeal, the city surrounding it plays a larger factor as well: you have a world outside of your school. There’s more to learn and explore outside of the walls of your educational institution! Whether it’s bustling cities, historic architecture, or surrounding nature, Canada’s got you covered.
